Abstract: Audio-tutorial science lessons were provided to 191 first and second grade children (instructed), and interviews were conducted periodically to assess changes in science concept under standing from grades one through twelve. A similar sample (n = 48) not receiving audio-tutorial lessons in grades one and two (uninstructed) was also interviewed periodically from grades one through twelve. Instructed students showed substantially more valid concept understandings and fewer invalid concepts (misconceptions) than uninstructed students in grades two, seven, ten, and twelve. Concept maps prepared from interview transcripts showed wide variation in knowledge for both groups, and concept maps scored using a scoring algorithm also showed significant differences favoring instructed students. The data show the lasting impact of early instruction in science and the value of concept maps as a representational tool for cognitive developmental changes.

Abstract: The theory of intuition learning is briefly reviewed and a model of the learning process is presented. The paper then discusses and characterizes an Interactive Intuition Learning System (IILS) and its relationship to experiential learning and learning pattern. From the initial intuition decision system defined by the experience judgment, a series of learning interval-systems with various experience levels are created. Firstly, human intuitive decision making gotten by the learning approach of self-organization of intuition decision processing, and the concept mapping of selection of knowledge and experience is established by artificial intuition method based on the decision trait of human intuition. Finally, an artificial intuition method combined with self-organization method of intuition computing is proposed according to the amelioration of the intuition computing. Experiment proves that the Intuition Concept Space and the interactive mapping intuition pattern inversion (IMIPI) approach are feasible. A prototype for a intuition learning environment designed and built by the author is then discussed along with its application in the design of a crime analysis for learning electrical circuits.

Abstract: This paper describes our effort to incorporate concept maps into a Computer Science introductory course. Studies were conducted that analyze student performance in relation to concept map activities to determine the benefit of concept maps as a learning tool. Our results not only support the idea of concept mapping as a teaching tool, they also suggest that students gain the most when they are directly involved in creating the concept map. A long term objective of this research project is to create a generic Learning-by-Teaching Environment (LTE) that can function in a variety of domains including general Computer Science. Our experience also suggests that a sophisticated and adaptive LTE could be successful in helping college students acquire a deeper understanding of course material and a better clarification of any prior topic-based misconceptions.

Abstract: The increased prevalence of digital devices with communication capability heralds the era of ubiquitous computing, as predicted by Mark Weiser. Ubiquitous computing aims to provide users with intelligent human-centric context-aware services at anytime anywhere. Optimal path planning in a ubiquitous network considers the needs of users and the surrounding context. This approach is very different from that applied by existing research on car navigation and mobile robots. This study proposes a context-aware path planning mechanism based on spatial conceptual map (SCM) and genetic algorithm (GA), referred to as UbiPaPaGo. The SCM model is adopted to represent the real map of the surrounding environment. The optimal path is planned using a GA, which is a robust metaheuristic algorithm. UbiPaPaGo attempts to automatically find the best path that satisfies the requirements of an individual user. A prototype of UbiPaPaGo is implemented to demonstrate its feasibility and scalability. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and the efficiency of UbiPaPaGo in finding the optimal path. ?? 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Finding the right semantic distance to be used for information research, classification or text clustering using Natural Language Processing is a problem studied in several domains of computer science. We focus on measurements that are real distances: i.e. that satisfy all the properties of a distance. This paper presents one ISA-distance measurement that may be applied to taxonomies. This distance, combined with a distance based on relations other than ISA, may be a step towards a real semantic distance for ontologies. After presenting the purpose of this work and the position of our approach within the literature, we formally detail our ISA-distance. It is extended to other relations and used to obtain a MDS projection of a musical ontology in an industrial project. The utility of such a distance in visualization, navigation, information research and ontology engineering is underlined.

Abstract: Abstract Domain ontologies play an important role in supporting knowledge-based applications in the Semantic Web. To facilitate the building of ontologies, text mining techniques have been used to perform ontology learning from texts. However, traditional systems employ shallow natural language processing techniques and focus only on concept and taxonomic relation extraction. In this paper we present a system, known as Concept-Relation-Concept Tuple-based Ontology Learning (CRCTOL), for mining ontologies automatically from domain-specific documents. Specifically, CRCTOL adopts a full text parsing technique and employs a combination of statistical and lexico-syntactic methods, including a statistical algorithm that extracts key concepts from a document collection, a word sense disambiguation algorithm that disambiguates words in the key concepts, a rule-based algorithm that extracts relations between the key concepts, and a modified generalized association rule mining algorithm that prunes unimportant relations for ontology learning. As a result, the ontologies learned by CRCTOL are more concise and contain a richer semantics in terms of the range and number of semantic relations compared with alternative systems. We present two case studies where CRCTOL is used to build a terrorism domain ontology and a sport event domain ontology. At the component level, quantitative evaluation by comparing with Text-To-Onto and its successor Text2Onto has shown that CRCTOL is able to extract concepts and semantic relations with a significantly higher level of accuracy. At the ontology level, the quality of the learned ontologies is evaluated by either employing a set of quantitative and qualitative methods including analyzing the graph structural property, comparison to WordNet, and expert rating, or directly comparing with a human-edited benchmark ontology, demonstrating the high quality of the ontologies learned.

Here, Norm-referencing in Item Analysis approach is usedbackslashnto find the item discrimination for elimination of irrelevant items.backslashnThe second phase, computes all the grade association rules. The weightbackslashnof concept in each learning item is considered and prerequisite conceptbackslashnsets are found which is not having any redundancy and cyclic in itsbackslashnmap, thereby facilitating the next step of procedure. Abstract: Given a set of observations, humans acquire concepts that organize those observations and use them in classifying future experiences. This type of concept formation can occur in the absence of a tutor and it can take place despite irrelevant and incomplete information. A reasonable model of such human concept learning should be both incremental and capable of handling the type of complex experiences that people encounter in the real world. In this paper, we review three previous models of incremental concept formation and then present CLASSIT, a model that extends these earlier systems. All of the models integrate the process of recognition and learning, and all can be viewed as carrying out search through the space of possible concept hierarchies. In an attempt to show that CLASSIT is a robust concept formation system, we also present some empirical studies of its behavior under a variety of conditions. ?? 1989.

Abstract: . Widget is not a new computing concept, but it has recently attracted much research interest because of its potential uses in a range of technological products/services. In assuming the challenge to develop an evaluation scheme for widgets/widget-based applications, some conceptual ambiguities about widget, especially its distinction from portlet, need to be clarified first. A survey aiming to collect opinions in this regard was conducted. Qualitative data were analyzed with Cmap (a content map tool) and Nvivo8 (a content analysis tool). Widgets invite more diverse interpretations than portlets, for which specifications have existed for some time. Relationships between these two entities are not consistently understood by respondents. A consensual definition of widget entails more scientific discourses in the future and will have significant implications for developing a robust evaluation framework for widget-based platforms.
